Problem Space
How can we ensure adequate user experience and security of telehealth applications as this will ensure efficient healthcare delivery and compliance with regulations ? The current state of telehealth applications falls short in delivering a seamless and intuitive user interface, compromising user experience and therefore hindering the effective delivery of healthcare services.
Problem Background
Telehealth applications are becoming a vital tool for getting healthcare services from the comfort of one's home because of the quick advancements in technology. Digital technologies have the potential to reshape human habits, including those concerning healthcare. This may occur because there is a perceived lack of the "human factor," which raises the question of whether the designer could close this gap and persuade people to utilize digital health solutions. What role has to he perform in order to succeed? Can an improved design that considers the Human Factor increase a medical product's usability, acceptability, accessibility, and enjoyment? Can a teaching experience prepare aspiring professionals for the difficulties posed by the digital healthcare era? To improve the telemedicine experience for patients and healthcare professionals alike, a number of issues must be resolved despite its convenience.
Mediconnect is to drive a high-performance culture, putting integrity and technology at the forefront. (Researchgate.net, n.d.). Although a wide range of medical products (such as telemedicine solutions) are available on the market, there are several challenges in their use, acceptance, and dissemination among users (especially when elderly).
Furthermore, reliable medical information must be readily available and accessible in order for telemedicine to be successful. One of the challenges users face is access to medical records either in a case of referral or in order to access secondary care. In order for healthcare professionals to make knowledgeable decisions during virtual consultations, patients must have easy access to their medical information, test findings, and treatment regimens. Nevertheless, the inability of many current telehealth applications to effectively compile and display medical information impedes the provision of effective healthcare.
Enhancing the usability of telehealth applications is the main goal, as it guarantees individualized interactions, easy access to medical records, and effective troubleshooting of technological issues. The lack of bodily presence in virtual encounters is one of the challenges in telemedicine. Many telehealth apps available today don't offer tailored experiences or have user-friendly interfaces. This frequently causes consumers to become dissatisfied and disengaged, which lowers the standard of care given overall. Carefully considered design can reduce fear and foster confidence, which enhances patient involvement and pleasure in general. Not only does it help patients, but it also improves healthcare providers' workflow. (sahilsawantd, 2023)
An inventive telehealth app like MediConnect is required to overcome these problems. By putting a high priority on usability and offering individualized interactions, easy access to medical information, and quick resolution of technological issues. This platform, Mediconnect, seeks to improve user experience by combining the use of technological support with artificial intelligence techniques. This would help patients and healthcare professionals find telemedicine more practical, efficient and accessible.
Research Insight
The findings from the survey on telehealth applications and remote medical consultations highlight several key areas for improvement to enhance the user experience and address technical challenges. The survey revealed that participants encountered various technical difficulties, including video conferencing issues, connectivity problems, and application malfunctions. The survey also highlighted issues around access to medical records. To promptly address and resolve these challenges, participants emphasized the importance of enhanced navigation, expanded functionality, improved user interface design, improved customer support, and clear troubleshooting guides.
Usability challenges faced by healthcare providers and patients when using telehealth applications were diverse. While some participants reported no challenges, others mentioned issues such as complex navigation, limited functionality, and poor user interface design. These insights underscore the need for user-centred design approaches to ensure intuitive and streamlined experiences for both healthcare providers and patients.
Furthermore, the impacts of these challenges on the overall telemedicine experience varied among participants. While some reported positive impacts, others experienced negative effects or indicated no significant impact. This highlights the importance of considering the individual experiences and perspectives of users when evaluating the success of telehealth applications.
To enhance usability and user experience, participants emphasized the need for specific improvements in telehealth applications. These included addressing challenges related to complex navigation, limited functionality, and poor user interface design. Additionally, participants expressed the importance of incorporating user feedback and constantly seeking ways to enhance the technical infrastructure supporting telemedicine.
This research insight underscores the significance of continuous improvement and user-centric design principles in the development and deployment of telehealth applications. By addressing technical challenges, improving usability, enhancing access to medical information, and providing robust technical support, healthcare providers and patients can benefit from a more seamless and satisfactory telemedicine experience. These insights can guide the development of future telehealth solutions, ensuring they meet the needs and expectations of users while fostering effective remote medical consultations.
Landing on the Solution
Based on our target users' pain points, we knew we wanted to work on the following feature of
User-Friendly Design: Creating an intuitive interface that simplifies navigation and accessibility for users of varying technological expertise.
When focusing on creating a user-friendly design for my telemedicine platform, I honed in on several key elements:
Intuitive Navigation: I ensured that the platform's layout and navigation were straightforward and logical, allowing users to easily find the information or services they needed without confusion or frustration. Clear, intuitive pathways were established for appointment scheduling, accessing medical records, and joining consultations.
Accessibility Features: Considering users with varying technological expertise and potential disabilities, I integrated accessibility features such as text resizing, screen reader compatibility, and high-contrast options. These accommodations enhanced usability for a wider range of users.
Simplified Interfaces: I streamlined the user interface by minimizing clutter, employing consistent design elements, and prioritizing essential information. This approach aimed to reduce cognitive load, making the platform more approachable and less intimidating, especially for older or less tech-savvy individuals.
Responsive Design: Recognizing the diverse devices users might utilize, we implemented a responsive design that ensured a seamless experience across desktops, tablets, and mobile phones. This adaptability allowed users to access the platform conveniently regardless of the device they used.
User Feedback Integration: To continuously refine the platform's user-friendliness, I incorporated mechanisms for users to provide feedback easily. This input was invaluable in identifying areas for improvement and ensuring ongoing optimization.
After showcasing our prototype, users emphasized how the simplified interface and easy navigation significantly enhanced their experience. They appreciated the platform's responsiveness across devices, making it convenient to access healthcare services wherever they were. Additionally, users with limited technological familiarity expressed increased comfort and confidence in using the platform, attributing it to the intuitive design and accessibility features.
