Problem Statement

“How do we make people, who deal with stress and other factors, sleep in a healthier and better way?”

Problem Background

“In today's fast-paced world, an increasing number of individuals are grappling with sleep-related issues that can have a profound impact on their physical health, mental well-being, and overall quality of life. Modern lifestyles, demanding schedules, and the prevalence of digital devices have contributed to disrupted sleep patterns and poor sleep quality for many. Insufficient sleep and irregular sleep schedules have been linked to a range of health concerns, including fatigue, decreased cognitive performance, mood disturbances, and even chronic conditions like obesity and cardiovascular diseases.

In terms of factors that affect sleep, from my own research, 71.4% of a group of 7 people said that stress was a factor that affected their sleep greatly. In a recent article, it is stated that stress is one of the main factors of sleep deprivation due to it stopping the mind and body from relaxing. The stress could come from work, school, relationships, and so on and so forth.

From my own research, it also showed that 71.4% of the group said temperature was another factor, 28.6% said it was technology usage, and 57.1% said it was light. From the research, the people were fighting a factor that determined the quality of sleep and this application will be used by anyone who wants to improve their sleep.”

Research Insights

User Pain Points

“Conducted a survey to obtain initial user data with regards to sleeping. To address the issues of sleep effectively, the questions were focused mainly on what factors affect their sleep.”

Supporting Data

“In the research, it was found that 71.4% of a group of 7 people said that stress was a factor that affected their sleep greatly. In a recent article from sleepadvisor.org, it is stated that stress is one of the main factors of sleep deprivation due to it stopping the mind and body from relaxing. The stress could come from work, school, relationships, and so on and so forth.

From my own research, it also showed that 71.4% of the group said temperature was another factor, 28.6% said it was technology usage, and 57.1% said it was light.”

Feedback

“In addition, the research also showed that 42.9% of the group did not have a consistent sleep schedule. Therefore, it is still a task not just for people who suffer from stress or other sleep related disorders, it will also work for people who cannot seem to maintain a regular sleep schedule.”

Landing on the Solution

“Based on our target users’ pain points, it was identified that stress was a huge factor that affected their sleep.”

Explanation of Solution

“SnoozeSense makes it easier to understand better our sleep patterns and set sleep schedules so we have adequate amount of time to rest and recover from the day. It will assess the user based on a number of factors like age, gender, occupation and so on, and develop a schedule and routine to help improve sleep. ”

“SnoozeSense will also make it possible for users to get in contact with medical professionals who help with sleep related issues. These could be doctors, therapists, and so on that will understand the issues of the users and set times for appointments, or check-ups."

Future Steps

“I plan on using my experience and knowledge to develop this new product with a team of developers and designers. This is a product that I believe I will enjoy developing and bringing to life.

“Co.Lab was a very interesting experience for me. I learnt how to conduct user research, prioritze features and produce spec documents. I will say that writing spec documents was my favorite part of the program. I enjoyed describing the product and my findings that will help me build the product that will not only satisfy the customers but also help people who did not know they needed it.

I also learnt how to break down so-called “complex problems” into smaller bits. It is all about solving a specific problem. The main thing is to identify the issue and think of the best way to solve it without overthinking. The surveys and interviews conducted helped me understand this in the best way possible.”

  1. Adapting to an Established Team: Joining the team in week 6 of 8 was challenging, as I had to quickly adapt to existing workflows, dynamics, and goals. This mirrors real-world situations where you often integrate into teams mid-project, and flexibility is essential.
  2. Work-Blocking for Efficiency: With only two weeks to complete the project, I learned the importance of a structured work-blocking system. This approach allowed me to manage my time effectively and meet deadlines under pressure.
  3. Making Data-Driven Design Decisions: Unlike my past projects, I had to rely on research conducted by others. This was a valuable experience in using pre-existing data to guide design decisions, helping me focus on the core insights without starting from scratch.

I learned how important communication is when working with a team. Communication provides understanding, advice, ideas, and much more. While working with the product team, I’ve found that communication keeps everything flowing smoothly. Working with a team also showed me that every member brings something different to the table and we all have to work together in order to align and meet our end goal.
